How Does FTIR Work?

FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) is a common technique for measuring the infrared spectrum of a material. When infrared (IR) light passes through a sample, some of the radiation is absorbed.

The pattern, or spectrum, of infrared light absorbed is unique to that chemical; it’s a molecular “fingerprint” that enables rapid and accurate identification. The vast majority of chemicals absorb infrared light, making it a near universal tool for identifying unknown substances. Key to the performance of RedWave FTIR products is our extensive, on-board database of chemical information used to identify specific molecules.
